Summary

How to focus on Christ during Advent

Most Christians agree that Christmas is all about Jesus, yet most of us spend little time preparing our hearts to celebrate Him。 Why is this? Partly because we don’t know how。

In Unwrapping the Names of Jesus, Asheritah Ciuciu leads readers through the four weeks of Advent (Hope, Preparation, Joy, and Love)。 Each week:

Begins with an interactive family devotional that equips readers to celebrate Advent together
Offers five daily reflections that focus on that week's name of Jesus
Includes suggestions for fun-filled family activities or service projects
This devotional can be used by readers in their own personal worship times or as a tool to engage in family worship during the busy holiday season。 Either way, participants will gain a greater sense of awe and wonder at who Jesus is。

By focusing on the person and character of Jesus throughout the Advent season, readers will prepare their hearts so that when they admire the live nativity, sit in the candlelight service, or wake up on Christian morning, they can join the faithful who sing from the bottom of their hearts, "O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!"

The short devotions in this book are such a joy to read, as you lean into Jesus and learn more about Him。

I knocked off a star because there’s one small part towards the end of the devotional that I (personally) don’t agree with, but other than that, I loved this book。 There’s a gorgeous cover & page design, each section is easy to read and gets to the point, and won’t add to the stress of the holiday season。

Well, I definitely read this at the wrong time of year--although these reflections are really suited for any time, not just Christmas。 Also a note that I don't read many devotionals, so this is a little outside my normal range。 Overall, though, I thought this was a nice set of reflections on some of the names of Jesus, and there wasn't much in it that set off my "but is that entirely accurate?" alarm。 (Which is pretty high praise, if you know me!) ;) I'll keep it in mind if I ever want to try an Well, I definitely read this at the wrong time of year--although these reflections are really suited for any time, not just Christmas。 Also a note that I don't read many devotionals, so this is a little outside my normal range。 Overall, though, I thought this was a nice set of reflections on some of the names of Jesus, and there wasn't much in it that set off my "but is that entirely accurate?" alarm。 (Which is pretty high praise, if you know me!) ;) I'll keep it in mind if I ever want to try an advent devotional book (during actual Advent, I mean)。One thing that I noticed about the organization--I thought it was odd that the list of activities to do with your family over each week came after all the week's reflections, so that you get the list of possible tasks for week one at the end of week one instead of the beginning。 I wasn't doing any of these with my family, but I think I would have been a bit confused if I had been, at least the first time。 ;) However, that is a minor criticism in the scheme of things。 ;) 。。。more

I’m so grateful for this short Advent devotional。 It’s written in very simple language about solid and meaningful truths。 Each reading takes less than ten minutes and covers a name given to Jesus in Scripture。 I imagine this makes a helpful resource for families with kids judging from the resources she lists。 But I can fully recommend it for individual reading。 I don't use devotionals very often。 When I found myself in a busier anxiety packed season, with no margin or head space to read Scriptur I’m so grateful for this short Advent devotional。 It’s written in very simple language about solid and meaningful truths。 Each reading takes less than ten minutes and covers a name given to Jesus in Scripture。 I imagine this makes a helpful resource for families with kids judging from the resources she lists。 But I can fully recommend it for individual reading。 I don't use devotionals very often。 When I found myself in a busier anxiety packed season, with no margin or head space to read Scripture like I normally do, I wanted a resource that would help me think about more than deadlines and tests when I saw the calendar。 Catching my breath from the intensity and long hours of work and study that became my normal since September, this little book filled a need for meaty reflection in a format that is doable and grace-filled。 I loved it。 。。。more

Perfect reading for the Christmas season。 Going to make it an annual tradition to help bring out the true meaning of the season。

I worked through several advent devotionals。 This one is the most family oriented of all of them。 We will probably repeat this one next holiday season!

This advent book is designed for family use, but I read through it on my own this year。 The book guides readers through four weeks of Advent, and each week begins with an interactive devotion (to go along with lighting of the Advent candles) followed by daily reflections on the various names of Jesus。 The book also offers a daily Scripture and prayer, discussion questions, supplementary Scripture readings, and suggestions for Christmas-themed family activities。 The writing is simple but lovely a This advent book is designed for family use, but I read through it on my own this year。 The book guides readers through four weeks of Advent, and each week begins with an interactive devotion (to go along with lighting of the Advent candles) followed by daily reflections on the various names of Jesus。 The book also offers a daily Scripture and prayer, discussion questions, supplementary Scripture readings, and suggestions for Christmas-themed family activities。 The writing is simple but lovely and set the tone of my heart this December as I sought to know Jesus a little more deeply this season。 The book itself is lovely: compact with an embellished casewrapped cover, sturdy pages, and a format that delights the eyes as well as the heart。 I have a feeling I will be returning to this book for many Decembers to come。 。。。more

I love Advent, and finding readings to keep me focused。 I liked the printable ornaments that came with this, and the family activities。 I had a hard time connecting with the daily readings though。

Highly recommend for a short, doable Advent book, either on your own or with kids - probably best suited for around elementary age, though it's actually pretty versatile。 I really loved the way she laid it all out, especially the forward at the beginning encouraging readers not to be dogmatic about doing all the extras or reading every single chapter on the day it was intended。 (My perfectionist soul needed that!)We didn't end up doing a lot of the extra activities, and we did miss a day here or Highly recommend for a short, doable Advent book, either on your own or with kids - probably best suited for around elementary age, though it's actually pretty versatile。 I really loved the way she laid it all out, especially the forward at the beginning encouraging readers not to be dogmatic about doing all the extras or reading every single chapter on the day it was intended。 (My perfectionist soul needed that!)We didn't end up doing a lot of the extra activities, and we did miss a day here or there。。。 but it was still great to have a couple short pages to read aloud each morning, as well as an application / challenge, a prayer, and extra Scripture to read if we had time。 It really got some good, deep spiritual conversations going with my five-year-old in particular!I would love to be able to follow it up in future years with a sort of Jesse tree ornament activity or something similar to help make the names of Jesus even more memorable for my kiddos! Really loved going through this as a way to prepare our hearts to celebrate Jesus this Christmas。 (Plus。。。 It's just so pretty!!!!) Five stars ⭐ 。。。more

Perfect choice for us this Advent season。

The activities at the beginning and end of each work were perfect for my family with young kids。 I had to modify some of the daily “names of Jesus” reading, though to help make the language make sense to my kiddos。 This is a beautifully written book, I would have just liked to see some consistency in the target reader age range

A great preparation to appreciate Christmas for what it actually is。 It was so refreshing to have something that aids in focusing on Jesus and not the hundreds of other things during this season that have zero to do the with the birth of Jesus。

Gentle and Lovely。 Was very doable with 3rd and 4th grade students。 This is one of their favorites。 They enjoyed discussing all of the Names, where they had heard them and what they meant to them personally。

Quick, easy devotional for the advent season。 Not super challenging。 Could be a good option for your first time trying to learn more about the Christmas season。

This little devotional book wants to bring back the meaning of Christmas and help us celebrate Jesus by giving us specific things to focus on。 The book is centered on the many, many names of Jesus such as King of Kings, Light of the World, Holy One of God, Lamb of God, Prince of Peace and such。The book starts with an introduction on why we should celebrate Advent and the author then gives a beautiful prayer to the person reading the book。Book LayoutAfter that the book is separated into the 4 top This little devotional book wants to bring back the meaning of Christmas and help us celebrate Jesus by giving us specific things to focus on。 The book is centered on the many, many names of Jesus such as King of Kings, Light of the World, Holy One of God, Lamb of God, Prince of Peace and such。The book starts with an introduction on why we should celebrate Advent and the author then gives a beautiful prayer to the person reading the book。Book LayoutAfter that the book is separated into the 4 topics of advent (which she explains in the introduction can vary slightly from church to church。) In the book they are Hope, Preparation, Joy and Love。Each week starts with a Sunday devotional that includes an urge to say a prayer, then light your candle, a verse to read aloud, a very short back and forth which you can say yourself or share the parts with your family, another verse and then a bible reading, followed by discussion questions and a carol。NOTE: The author directs you to a website where you can print out the questions and scripture readings on separate slips of paper to pass out to family members so they can participate。 Unfortunately that website isn’t working。 Although you could still pass the devotional and bible around easily enough。 I’ll take this down if and when the author fixes this。For each day of the week Monday-Friday there is a name of Jesus to read about including a challenge and prayer related to that name。 A few bible versus are given after that for further study。At the end of five days is a list of fun activities you could do on Saturday to help celebrate the season。 Think regular Christmas activities with a faith twist such as baking cookies for your mail carrier, singing gospel centered carols, make snow angels outside or with paint and reflect on the angels role in the nativity story and such。Remember!I especially like what the author says in her introduction about the use of the devotional:“Any time you spend quieting your heart before God and worshipping Him is time well spent。 But be assured of this: God is not going to be disappointed if you miss a day (or a week’s) devotional or challenge。 Nor is He going to be impressed if you check it off each day。The purpose of this devotional is not to get more favor with God – Jesus already secured His approval when He took our place on the cross…” – pg 15 I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

I read this book for the Advent season, and enjoyed it。 The author reviewed several of the names of Jesus as they applied to the Christmas season。 This would be excellent to use as a family resource, as there are recommended acts of service for families to do together。

Thoughtful way for the family to begin the Advent Season!Asheritah’s Christmas devotional is perfect for families of all sizes - there is something even the young ones can ponder。 And her website link has dozens of ideas to connect the concepts with little minds, hearts, and hands。 Simple enough for the kids, but deep enough for adults to meditate on!

I wanted to love this book。 The idea is cool--read your way through Advent with supplementary materials online including music, coloring pages, activity ideas, and printables。 I also really liked the idea of focusing on the names of Jesus as a theme for the Advent season。 Plus--the book is physically gorgeous。But I didn't love it。 I didn't even really like it, sadly。 Nothing in this book was ground-breaking or earth-shattering; it felt more like an introductory concept for beginner Christians wh I wanted to love this book。 The idea is cool--read your way through Advent with supplementary materials online including music, coloring pages, activity ideas, and printables。 I also really liked the idea of focusing on the names of Jesus as a theme for the Advent season。 Plus--the book is physically gorgeous。But I didn't love it。 I didn't even really like it, sadly。 Nothing in this book was ground-breaking or earth-shattering; it felt more like an introductory concept for beginner Christians who were looking for a pretty, creative way to enter one of their first Advents as believers。 For anyone who has been in the faith for much of their lives, this book feels rather childish and--okay I'll say it--boring。 I did like that the readings were short so it was easy to focus on during the holiday break when my kids were home and distracting, but their short lengths left a lot to be desired content-wise。 I also really dislike prayers that are written for me; I'd much rather have a list of questions or food for thought to consider before praying on my own, or journal prompts that could also serve as prayer inspiration。 It felt as though I didn't need to put any thought into anything with every piece of it spelled out for me。 If you're looking for a way to incorporate Advent candle lightings into your Christmas season and want simple, straight-forward readings and access to Advent playlists and activities, this is a great starting point。 Ciuciu includes scripture and readings/recitations any member of the family can share during the weekly Advent candle lighting。 。。。more
